vSphere 6 Installation Experience

Image
Previously I posted on my installation and upgrade of my vSphere 5.5 here .  Since each upgrade comes about a year or two that I perform, we ought to forget some important things.  So here is my experience. Before you start, head to the vSphere Upgrade Center .  Here you will find all the resources needed.  There is also a simple install walkthrough to guide you through with screenshots! 1) Read the documents on the requirements!  During the installation the vCenter requires at least 17GB of space to store the MSI and part of it the new Platform Service Controller (PSC) takes up 8GB install in the C:\ProgramData path.  Go through the requirements in the product documentation page . 2) Your DSN user in SQL for vCenter (vpxuser), needs to have additional rights for installation and upgrade but not during operations time. Grant this rights back.  In vCenter 6 installation, it points out the additional rights required.  This is great!  ...

VMware vSphere App HA 1.1 What's New

I have been presenting during VMware Partner Exchange in Singapore as well in certain workshops for customer and many times we brought up vSphere App HA as part of application availability solution which is part of vSphere Enterprise Plus. Previously with the 1.0 release, I did a post on the setup but it slip from my mind that there was an minor update to 1.1 on 8th April 2014 which I forgotten to update here which I find it pretty useful.  Do check out my previous post to have a better understanding.  The setup does not change much. In 1.0, it only support vSphere web client 5.5 and using vCenter Hyperic 5.7.  With the release of 1.1, it will now support from vSphere 5.1 U2 and creation of custom service where it is non default applications in vSphere App HA.  Lastly the pain in 1.0 of not able to edit a policy after it is created it now possible.  Finally this is fixed else you would need to delete and re-create a policy due to minor changes and reappl...

vSphere 5.5 Installation with MS SQL Overview

Image
It has been sometime that I last did any installation and decide to rebuild my home lab.  I will skip the installation or upgrade of ESX server as this is pretty straight forward either using VMware vCenter Update Manager or via booting up from CD. I will document the vCenter components as well as the databases requirements.  The SQL query are all tested during my installation.  I have record a simple video to show that the SQL query are error free and allows vCenter to install without any errors. I might miss out some stuff here since I am not a DB guy or a SQL expert so to speak. vCenter 64bit DSN after user and rights assigned Check out support Database from here Adobe Flash required for machine access web client  Similarly to what I have documented year before on vCenter 5.1 here , the SQL scripts did not change other than the requirements of SSO database is no longer required. Extracted from vCenter installation guide which can be found in t...
